In the video above, MC Shan addresses a statement Masta Ace made about why Shan did not appear on the classic posse cut The Symphony. Not only does Shan say Marley Marl didn’t pay anyone who appeared on In Control Volume 1, but he also drops the bombshell of saying Marl did not produce many of his credited tracks. MC Shan goes on to say the likes of Big Daddy Kane & Biz Markie made their own beats while Marley Marl took credit for them.

In the video below, Marley Marl addresses some of the allegations Shan made. The legendary Juice Crew producer dismisses Shan’s claims that he took credit for tracks he didn’t produce, says that Shan is irrelevant and explains that “nobody was getting paid” during their time at Cold Chillin’ Records.

The last we heard of First Serve it was 3am in a Parisian suburb at an out of control house party with ‘The Goon Time Mixtape’ blasting into the night. That was just a taste of things to come from De La Soul’s Plug 1 & Plug 2 present ‘First Serve’; a dynamic hip-hop group, an album, a concept, the soundtrack to a movie that has yet to be made and a fable for our times.
‘First Serve’ is many things, but at its heart it is the story of two young boys from Queens, New York with big dreams and larger rhymes. Two friends, Deen Whitter (aka Plug 2 / Dave) and Jacob ‘Pop Life’ Barrow (aka Plug 1/ Pos), friends from seventh grade, are by their own admission, “different, but the differences seem to complement everything we do.” Their name ‘First Serve’ comes from their motto, “First come, First Serve, get what you deserve.”
Due to hit the streets in April 2012 (4-2-2012), the ‘First Serve’ album tells the story of two dreamers in a basement struggling to start their musical career, the battles they face, through to the point that they eventually release their debut single, ‘make it big’ and their hard work and persistence finally pays off. As we know that is rarely where the story ends and the story of ‘First Serve’ is no different. Taking place in an animated world that could have been imagined by Hawley Pratt on Magic Mushrooms, the high spirited and often hilarious journey is pure old school hip-hop; skits, disco, beats, funk, quips, burns and hustlin’ all included.

At Friday’s Madlib Medicine Show tour stop in San Francisco, the producer announced a collaborative project with the rapper Freddie Gibbs (photos here). Gibbs also debuted “Thuggin’” and “Deep,” from their debut EP. The 6-track record is released on Madlib’s Madlib Invazion label – the imprint the producer founded to release his 13 Madlib Medicine Show volumes. The duo’s as-of-yet untitled album is planned for release in first quarter 2012.

For Madlib, this marks another entry in an exciting series of collaborative albums that he has created with the likes of DOOM (Madvillainy), the late J Dilla (Jaylib) and Strong Arm Steady (In Search Of Stoney Jackson). For Gibbs, the album serves as somewhat of a departure: coming off the heels of his acclaimed Cold Day In Hell album, and before the release of the album he’s finishing for Young Jeezy’s CTE imprint, this project gives the Gary, Indiana-bred, LA-based rapper a chance to stretch out over the Beat Konducta’s lush musical tapestry. If the first single is any indication, this collaboration will find Gibbs’ rough raps landing atop smoldering soul and jagged psychedelia.

Erick Sermon Discusses Health Scare

EPMD's Erick Sermon spoke in detail about the heart attack he suffered last week. The rapper/producer was rushed to the emergency room and EPMD's DJ Scratch tweeted that he'd had a heart but was 'OK.'

Sermon later confirmed to worried fans that he was indeed recuperating. In an interview with Sway, he shared what happened that night.

"I scared myself, man, it's crazy," Sermon told Sway. "I was downstairs on Wednesday night, I was making this record -- I went upstairs and I sat on the sofa and I had got two sharp pains on my left-hand side and I said, 'Maybe I'm sitting wrong,' so I positioned myself differently on the sofa and I sat there and watched the TV. ... Around twelve o'clock [on Thursday], I got the same pains on my left-hand side, so I said, 'You know what, let me go to the emergency room' -- when I got there, as soon as I hit the door, my whole leftside kind of cramped up on me -- I started getting those pains again, so they put me to the back to get a blood pressure reading and my blood pressure reading was 200 over 190. ... If I didn't make it there in time, I would have suffered a stroke first -- so when I got to the emergency room, they figured out that heart attack was a mild one and they took me in the back and I'm still here. I've been here for about five days."

Erick Sermon Resting After Heart Attack

Rapper/producer Erick Sermon is reportedly recuperating after suffering a heart attack several days ago. The news broke just days after fellow hip hop star Heavy D suddenly in his home, and fans quickly scrambled to find out if the EPMD member was in critical condition.

"I'm good! I got two more tests on Monday and Tuesday then I'm home hopefully on Wednesday," said Sermon via statement.

DJ Scratch, the longtime deejay for EPMD, tweeted the news that Sermon had suffered a heart attack on Saturday (November 12.) Scratch also assured fans that Erick was doing ok.

In addition to Heavy D's death and Erick Sermon's heart attack, rapper Rick Ross suffered two seizures in one day last month en route to a concert.

DUES BEEN PAID consists of myself, Rod Da Blizz and Thruway. This collaboration or project wasn't something that was planned extensively, we actually wrote, recorded and mixed this EP in under a month. It all started with the song "We Ain't Fuckin' Around" which we recorded some time in August. The chemistry and vibe was all natural, so we took it from there.

FUCK OUTTA HERE is that pure, unfiltered, non political, New York City BOOM BAP Hip Hop that has been missing from the game for some time now.

At Crown City Records, our motto is "WE DO HIP HOP" and this EP exemplifies just that!
